In our last blog, we gave ideas about how to get your children involved in learning about this year’s summer Olympic host country, Brazil. We are Rainbow Chimes Early Childhood Education and Care Center. We use the High Scope curriculum, which emphasizes participatory learning. One key factor of this curriculum is that children are allowed to explore topics that interest them. Accordingly, if your child is fascinated by insects, let them learn about the insects of the Brazilian rainforest. Almost everyone can find something of interest when it comes to the Olympic games. Older children can read to younger ones about past Olympians and everyone can join in the fun. These activity suggestions are just that, suggestions. Let your child pick the activity that interests them the most, and run with it.

  • Flags are an integral part of national identity, and flags will be flying high during the Olympics. Study the flag of Brazil. Older children can learn more about the history or the specific star constellations portrayed on the Brazilian flag, while younger kids can enjoy making a replica out of felt or construction paper.
  • While you’ve got the felt or construction paper out, look at the other flags on display, and talk about colors, shapes, or locations, depending on the age of the child(ren).
  • This is a great opportunity to teach your children about the American flag and even the heritage of your family, your ancestors, and the flag of the country(ies) from which they came.
  • One of the most recognizable symbols of the Olympic games is the set of five rings. Practice counting to five and learning the colors, and explore with your family the meaning behind the rings. Your child can make rings out of felt or pipe cleaners. Older kids can make cookies or interlocking cakes.
